City-run programme strengthens families

The commemoration of International Family Day on 15 May coincides with a
decade of the City’s Strengthening Families programme, which was first piloted
in 2013. Ten years later, the programme – which is one of the City’s many
social crime and substance abuse interventions - has facilitated stronger bonds
for more than 1 700 families in Cape Town
The City's Social Development and Early Childhood Development (SD&ECD) Department has numerous focus areas, including substance abuse interventions and prevention.
'Very often, problems at home are blamed for social ills such as substance abuse, gang involvement, truancy and other negative behaviours. The Strengthening Families programme goes right to the heart of matters. It's designed to improve relationships and the overall climate in the home environment, and builds resilience in young people so that they are able to make good life choices. A solid foundation and good support system at home are critical,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.The Strengthening Families Programme is internationally recognised, and works with both child and parent to recognise the value of familial relationships.
The programme consists of 10 sessions over a period of eight weeks, focusing on the value of family relationships and how to deal with stress. It also coaches children on how to have goals and dreams.
By the end of June 2018, 1 076 families had participated from numerous areas across the metropole. Post pandemic, the number of families participating has increased to 1 713.
In this financial year, the 25 facilitators assigned to the programme have rolled out 23 sessions around the metropole, including Eersteriver, Khayelitsha, Manenberg, Athlone, Atlantis, Vrygrond and Mitchells Plain.
The objectives of the Strengthening Families programme are to improve children's social, communication and life skills and improve parent and child relationships within a family environment, among others.
The programme has a preventive and educational focus, and also addresses topics like behavioural challenges such as aggression; juvenile delinquency and mental health.
'We are really grateful to see so many families participating in the programme as families play such an important role in the many challenges faced in our communities. Parents have a big responsibility to create a safe space for children to grow up in, to learn and navigate the different stages that come with adolescence. On International Family Day, we should all recognise the role of families and how it can impact our social fabric. If we all work together to strengthen family values and relationships, we will build a stronger and safer community for the benefit of all,' added Councillor Van der Ross.
